Hollie Cook- Vessel of Love
(Paul Cook's daughter and one time Slit's 2022 reggae release. Really trippy, more Massive Attack than trad reggae, but I really enjoyed this.)
Aerosmith- Rocks (Quad Mix)
(My all time favorite hard rock record. Lots of audio surprises on this Quad mix. I guess you might need to know the album inside and out to spot the differences. Great stuff.)
Prince Buster- Back To Where It All Began: The Blue Beat Singles (RSD Release)
Gillan- Glory Road
(First time hearing this 1980 release. Read a great review. Giilan's solo years slipped by me. Meh. Kinda bored me.)
Living Colour- Time's Up
Southern Culture On The Skids- At Home With...
Dave Edmunds- Closer To The Flame
Hoodoo Gurus- Blow Your Cool
Best songs of the day:
Thursday, August 29, 2024
8/28/24
Jontavious Willis- West Georgia Blues
(Surprisingly good acoustic blues record but nothing I will play a second time.)
Steve Howe- Beginnings
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Wild God
(I fell hard for the first song. But by track 5, it was starting to all sound the same. The big, sweeping arrangements with the choir, don't change much. Every song feels like the big finale to a non-existent show. I know where Cave is coming from, in the wake of personal tragedy. I just don't know if it works as a record.)
The Weeklings- Raspberry Park
The Ethiopians- Let's Ska & Rock Steady
Cheap Trick- Epic Archive: '75-'92 (Personal Playlist)

Donovan- Greatest Hits
Aerosmith- Get Your Wings (Quad Mix)
(Thanks to our Burning Wood friend Randy, I now know that Quad mixes contain a number of different takes and mixes, of course. This one was fun!)
Yabby You & King Tubby- King Tubby's Prophesy Of Dub
The Lovin' Spoonful- French 60's E.P. Collection
Neu!- '75
Jackie Mittoo- Macka Fat
Hoodoo Gurus- Mars Needs Guitars
(Best trifecta of the day.)
The Kinks- The Kink Kontroversy (Kevin Gray MONO Master)
New Radicals- Maybe You've Been Brainwashed, Too
(This always ends up being the best thing I listened to. I can't say enough about this record.)

Clifford Jordan- These Are My Roots: Jordan Plays Leadbelly
Jerry Reed- The Unbelievable Guitar & Voice Of...

Band Maid- Maid In Japan
v/a-Lafayette Saturday Night
Sunday, August 25, 2024
8/24/24
John Surman- Words Unspoken (about half)
(Started off strong with the opening cut "Pebble Dance." Then, it just meandered into what I think was your basic tuneless, new age-y ECM session.)
Steve Miller Band- Sailor
APB- Something To Believe In
(Such a great run of singles in such a short period of time.)
Steely Dan- Pretzel Logic
(Underrated.)
Yes- Close To The Edge (Steven Wilson Remix)
Television- Sketches (The Demos, 1974-75)
Crowded House- Woodface
Todd Rundgren- Liars Live
Motorhead- Lemmy Entertain you (Personal Playlist)
(The ultimate elixir. Turn it up! You'll drown out all the shit around you!)
Saturday, August 24, 2024
8/23/24
Chappell Roan- The Rise & Fall Of A Midwest Princess
(I made it all the way through. The production is infuriating. The same ol' same ol', Olivia Rodrigo/Billie Eilish autotune, breathy vocals, house beats, etc. There are a number of really solid melodies and hooks, but because of the boilerplate production, it gets old very fast.)
Keith Hudson-Flesh Of My Skin, Blood Of My Blood
Shelby Lynne- Consequences Of The Crown
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings- Woodland
Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks- True
Elvis Costello & The Attractions- Trust (Disc 2)
(This plays just a solidly as the album proper.)
Lloyd Charmers- Reggae Is Tight
(Fun, but not nearly as sublime as "Reggae Charm."
David Bowie- Rock 'n' Roll Star (Single LP Edition)
Barbara Lynn- The Crazy Cajun Recordings
The Who- A Quick One (True Stereo, Abbey Road HSM)
Friday, August 23, 2024
8/22/24
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings- Woodland
(Fantastic! At least five new classics from these two.)
Daryl Hall/John Oates- Abandoned Luncheonette (75th Anniversary 45 RPM Analog RM)
(Wow! Stunning. Never sounded better.)
Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks- True
(Pretty damn good. Like a vintage Yes record. And a great story behind it all.)
Fontaines D.C.- Romance
(Album #4, and I am still not impressed. Sounds like Coldplay with balls, which means it's boring only louder.)
Beastie Boys- Licensed To Ill
Desmond Dekker & the Aces- Intensified
Burning Spear- Rocking Time
The Kinks- Everybody's In Show-Biz
The Rolling Stones- Hackney Diamonds
Thursday, August 22, 2024

Tom Waits- Rain Dogs
Paul McCartney- Flowers In The Dirt
Marshall Crenshaw- Life's Too Short
St. Vincent- All Born Screaming
The Plugz- Electrify Me
The Modern Lovers- S/T
The Grays- Ro Sham Bo
(If there was ever a record in need of a remastered deluxe vinyl edition with bonus tracks- which should include their Wire cover--it's this gem.)

Queen- A Day At The Races
Billy Joel- Personal Playlist
Sunday, August 18, 2024
8/17/24
Grateful Dead- Terrapin Station
(A friend selected this record as his underrrated with "Workingman's Dead" as his overrated. He is a "dead head," and I trust him. So I decided to listen to this, knowing I had heard it years ago and did not like it. Respectfully, "Workingman's Dead" is what I love about the Dead and "Terrapin Station" is everything I hate about the Dead.)
Shelby Lynne- Consequence Of The Crown
(Excellent first spin. A truly beautiful record. I didn't want it to end.)
Nick Cave- Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
v/a- Diggin' In Kingston (Personal Playlist)
Thin Lizzy- Black Rose
Devon Allman- Miami Moon (three songs)
This did nothing for me. Pretty bad, actually. And a good band behind him, too.)
Velvet Underground- White Light/White Heat (Abbey Road Half Speed Master)
(It has to be an industry in-joke that a classic lo-fi album was given the audiophile treatment. It's still a glorious lo-fi mess, the way it was meant to be, it just costs more money.)
Frank Zappa & the Mothers Of Invention- Joe's Corsage
Van Halen- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Juliana Hatfield- Sings Olivia Newton-John & ELO (Best Of Both)
Saturday, August 17, 2024
8/16/24
Elvis Costello & The Attractions- Radio City Music Hall, 8/16/84
(40th anniversary of this show. I had awful seats, 3rd mezzanine, all the way over to one side. My date was a new Costello fan and it was the first time she was seeing him live. She kept mentioning how she hoped he would play "Love Field!" (Really. "Love Field.") He did play it. Really a great set list. This tape ain't too bad either.)
Grateful Dead- Wake Of The Flood
Metallica- Ride The Lightning
Blue Oyster Cult- Secret Treaties
Houndog- S/T
(One-off from David Hidalgo and Mike Halby. Forgot how swampy good this was.)
Jellyfish- Spilt Milk
The Dukes Of Stratosphear- Psurroundabout Ride
Jimmy Clanton- The Best Of
(Not actually a "Best Of," just an album of great swamp pop recorded in 1964 that producer Bill Justis thought was Clanton's best at that point. It's true!)
NRBQ- Keep This Love Goin'
Friday, August 16, 2024
8/15/24
Brad Mehldau- Largo
Van Halen- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Bette Smith- Goodthing

8/14/24
Desmond Dekker & The Aces- Intensified
Robin Taylor Zander- The Distance
Grand Funk Railroad- Closer To Home
Steely Dan- Katy Lied
Grateful Dead- Dick's Pick Vol. 8 (Harpur College, 5/2/70, Acoustic Set)
(This is what turned me around. It was this acoustic set that made me realize Jerry Garcia was an incredible guitar player, and if they tried, they could harmonize really well, too. This is what made me a Dead fan. I finally got it.)
Adrian Belew- Lone Rhino
David Bowie- Blackstar
(I like this record less with every spin. Overrated and occasionally really annoying.)
NRBQ- Ludlow Garage 1970
Elvis Costello & The Attractions- Get Happy!!
Traffic- John Barleycorn Must Die
Wednesday, August 14, 2024
8/13/24
Bette Smith- Goodthing
(Great record! Review up on BW today.)
Elvis Presley- Memphis (2 LP Highlights)
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac- Greatest Hits
Pete Townshend- La Jolla, 6/22/01
(Way too much talking from Pete, and most of it is unpleasant. A few good performances.)

Al Green- Personal Playlist
Huey "Piano" Smith- In Session: 1951-1962
Blossom Toes- We Are Ever So Clean
Rainbow- Personal Playlist
The Hollies- Butterfly...Plus
(One of my all time faves, I created a new version, adding in some leftovers and b-sides from the same session, as well as tracks that appeared on the U.S. press "Dear Eloise/King Midas In Reverse." Not bad!)
Monday, August 12, 2024
8/11/24

Fleetwood Mac- Then Play On (Original U.K.)
Dave & Ansel Collins- Double Barrel

(Some of the best tracks never made the album. Here are two.)
Grateful Dead- American Beauty (Kevin Gray Master)

(That Kevin Gray cut above put me in the mood.)

Nico- Desertshore
(This record would never have had a chance with me 30 years ago. Now, in a strange way, I find it comforting.)
Leigh Harris- House Of Secrets
(Little Queenie was a New Orleans legend and she was one of the first artists I got to see on my first trip to the Crescent City. Been a long time since I played this one and it still holds up. Here are two.)
MC5- Kick Out The Jams
(..."Motherf**kers!")
The Ravens w/Jimmy Ricks- Best Of
(Every song a winner. Here are two.)
Alton Ellis- Be True To Yourself
Bob Marley & The Wailers- One Love At Studio One: 1964-1966 (Record Two)
(I know two guys who love this early material and really dislike the records that put Marley on the map. I understand the former, but really don't get the latter. Here are two great covers from these early sessions.)
Junior Delgado- Bushmaster Revolution
v/a- Swing Easy: Reggae, Soul Plus Sweet Music
Little Roy- Bongo Nyah
(Received a bunch of rare reggae vinyl rips from a friend. About half are first timers for me, including these three. I really loved half of the Delgado. All of "Swing Easy" was a blast. And Little Roy was the best of the lot. Loved it. Here are two.)
C.C. Adcock- S/T

Professor Longhair- New Orleans Piano
Paul McCartney- The "Complete" Unplugged
(I knew there were more songs played than what were released on the CD and LP, but I didn't know the official set was out of sequence, as well. This "complete" version is exactly as it happened and is it fantastic.)
Keith Hudson-Flesh Of My Skin, Blood Of My Blood
Aerosmith- Greatest Hits (LP 1)
Rod Stewart/Faces- 1969/70 (Personal Playlist)
(A best of Rod's first solo album and "First Step.")

Graham Gouldman- The Graham Gouldman Thing
(This record is super short, but I'd still get rid of that last instrumental track on Side Two. It belongs on a different album.)

(Woke up singing "The Israelites.)
The Wild Tchoupitoulas- S/T

Elvis Presley- Personal Playlist
(Just started Lenny Kaye's book "Lightning Striking." First chapter is on Memphis. Put me in an Elvis mood.)
X- Smoke & Fiction
(Yep. Still great on second pass.)
Laura Nyro w/Labelle- Gonna Take A Miracle

The Woggles- Time Has Come
(I've seen the name for years but don't think I had ever heard a note. They will be opening for Southern Culture On The Skids in September, so I thought I'd check out the new one. Pretty average garage rock. Nothing really.)

Kirsty MacColl- Free World: The Best Of 1979-2000
The Beatles- Get Back(1969 Glyn Johns Mix)
Happy & Artie Traum- Double Back
(First time, on a suggestion from a friend in the wake of Happy Traum's passing. Was not expecting what I heard. I thought it would be dated Greenwich Village, folky precious. But this was more like solo Nesmith and even the Dead at times. Great record.)
