9/12/24

Robyn Hitchcock- 1967: Vacations In The Past
(I was hoping to like this more. But almost all of his covers really got under my skin.)

Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets- Indoor Safari
The Who- Kingston, 2/12/20
MC5- High Time
The Stooges- Personal Playlist

Jack White- Fear Of The Dawn

Living Colour- Collideoscope

(I remembered nothing about this record, but I have been on a Living Colour kick and I really loved their last album "Shade." This record was horrible. Dense and tuneless. Explains why I have no memory of it.)

v/a-Roots Rock Rebels: When Punk Met Reggae 1975-1982 (Disc 1)

(Great Disc One. Really solid programming. Looking forward to Disc Two.)

Joe Higgs- Life Of Contradiction
(Emailing with a vinyl buyer looking for reggae titles, and we both agreed that this record is a Top 5 of all time. I told him I thought it was the "Rubber Soul" of reggae records. If you are reading, you should listen to it, if you don't know it.)

9/8/24

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66- S/T
Grant Green- Feelin' The Spirit
The Modern Jazz Quartet- Patterns

(This was a very satisfying trio on a Sunday morning.)

Bob Marley & The Wailers- Uprising
Sade- The Best Of...

Sly & The Family Stone- Greatest Hits (Quad Mix)
(A few of these mixes are wild! Fun to hear songs you think you knew inside out, inside out.)

Beastie Boys- To The 5 Boroughs
(Haven't played this one in ages. Saw this tour at MSG. Great show and great record. Sounded good today.)

Doris Troy- S/T
The Fireman- Electric Arguments

Faces- BBC In Concert, April 1973

(Another set from that new BBC box. Excellent!)

9/7/24

Jeff Lynne- Armchair Theater

Prince Lasha Quintet feat. Sonny Simmons- The Cry!

(Impossible to find for years. Brand new, stellar reissue released on Friday. Brilliant!)

Crosby, Stills & Nash- S/T
Massive Attack- Blue Lines

David Bowie- Never Let Me Down (2018 McNulty Remix)
(Mario McNulty did the impossible and turned one of the worst records of Bowie's career into something very listenable. I genuinely like this record now.)

Jack White- No Name
Led Zeppelin- III

(There are so many Zeppelin references and sounds and phrasing on this new Jack White record, it brought me right to "Zep III.")

Cheap Trick- Heaven Tonight
Leon Russell- S/T (Kevin Gray Master)

9/6/24

Bash & Pop- Friday Night Is Killing Me
(This has aged really well. It's like The 'Mats going full on power pop.)

David Gilmour- Luck And Strange

(Lots of fine guitar playing, as well as a few memorable tunes. But def needs an edit.)

Bad Brains- Quickness

Willie Tee- I'm Only A Man
(Very happy to have this back in the collection.  For years it was a $400 record. I finally sold it for good money. And now it's back in a limited run of 1000. A New Orleans legend, Willie Tee meets a legendary producer David Axelrod, and the results are exactly as good as they should be. A deep soul classic!)

The Doors- S/T (APP 45 RPM Cut)

Jack White- No Name

(Wow! Did not expect to love this as much as I did. Dedicated post on Burning Wood coming Monday.)

The Plugz- Electrify Me
Queen- S/T

iPod on Shuffle:
Seven Years In Tibet- David Bowie
In The Light- Led Zeppelin

9/5/24

Rockpile- Seconds Of Pleasure
The Remains- S/T (Kevin Gray MONO Master)
The Beach Boys- Wild Honey
The Beach Boys- 20/20
The Guess Who- The Best Of

(Did some record shopping in Philly on Wednesday and picked up a dozen or so records, including these five. That mono Remains is a great release and a must listen, and I do think "20/20" is really underrated.)

Rhett Miller- The Believer
(Too much to say about this. Stay tuned for a Burning Wood post.)

Elvis Costello- Spike
(There's a great E.P. within this album.)

Faces- John Peel, 1971
(If the whole BBC box sounds like this, it's going to be one of the best releases of the year!)

Bobby Womack- My Prescription

New Order- Substance
(Had to hear this after seeing it performed live in Philly on Wednesday. "Substance" would be a contender for best  "best of," but a few songs really knock this down a peg. It felt that way at the show, too.)

Amyl & The Sniffers- Comfort To Me
The Waldos- Rent Party

9/3/24

Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks- True

African Head Charge- Drastic Season (about half)

(Man, this is one weird record.)

Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster NCF All Stars- The Broadside, 5/1/24
Eno- Here Come The Warm Jets
Jefferson Airplane- Surrealistic Pillow (Kevin Gray MONO Master)

Living Colour- Shade
(If you have ever enjoyed this band, this is a late career gem,)

The Rolling Stones- S/T (U.K.MONO)
The Rolling Stones- Now! (MONO)

(These records are terribly underrated. I think both "Aftermath" and "Between The Buttons" are overrated. They seem to lose their way a bit. But on the first three or four, they really knew what they wanted.)

9/1/24

Caravan- S/T (U.K. MONO)
Bob Marley & The Wailers- Kaya

Benny Trokan- Do You Still Think Of Me?

(First solo record from Jay Vons, Reigning Sound and Spoon bassist. Great 60's AM radio sound and vibe, but as usual, no real songs to go with them. I've heard worse.)

Engelbert Humperdinck- Gold
(Just read about the ongoing 60 year feud between Humperdinck and Tom Jones, with Jones just last week calling Humperdinck a "prick." Put me in the mood for some of the Hump's 60's singles. I really dig about a dozen of them.)

Wings- Venus & Mars
St. Vincent- Actor
Yes- S/T

Sunday, September 1, 2024

8/31/24

Ranking Joe w/Sly & Robbie- Top Ranking (five songs)
(Not good.)

Paul McCartney- Chaos & Creation In The Backyard

(Late career masterpiece.)

Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint- The River In Reverse
Lloyd Charmers w/Byron Lee & The Dragonaires- Reggae Charm
The Beatles- 1962-1966 (2023 Remix: Sides Two, Three, Five & Six)
