7/9/25

Television- Marquee Moon- ****
The Gladiators- Presenting The Gladiators- ****

Paul McCartney- Ram- ****
(For any vinyl people reading, this was a pressing from 1980 when Macca was signed to Columbia and it had a great, punchy sound to it. I think in many ways, it is better, more powerful than the half-speed master. Good chunky guitar in the right channel.)

King Crimson- In The Court of The Crimson King (Side One)- ****
The Who- Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy- ****

Paul McCartney & Wings- Back To The Egg- ****
(Yet another Macca record that deserves so much more.)

Little Feat- Sailin' Shoes- ****
(Over 50 years and "Willin'" still shakes me up.)

The Beatles- Hey Jude- ****
(Because pressings matter to vinyl people, this is a 1978 issue on the purple Capitol label and like so many of those reissues on the purple Capitol label, this was a killer.)

You’ve gotta love a 4- star day. Willin’ is perfect. I don’t think I’ve heard a bad cover of it either.

I first knew Willin’ not as a Little Feat song, but as a Byrds song on their boxed set. When my friend told me it was a cover, I sought out Sailin’ Shoes and that set me on a new path.

Have loved that song from my first listen. So many good versions out there—The Byrds, Linda Ronstadt, Hoffs & Sweet, Steve Earle, etc etc. And of course the original!

In your rating system is 4 stars the top rating or does it go to 5?

The ratings go to 5, but I am not rating the record. I am rating the listening experience, which is to say, if I listen to a 5-star record, but if it doesn't hit me for whatever reason, maybe I wasn't completely in the mood, it may get a ***/12 or **** rating here. Conversely, I may play a record that I never thought much of, like Nico's "Desertshore," and if it works or surprises me, it'll get a **** or ****1/2 rating.

Over the years Ram has probably been played more than anything else in my collection.

I don't have a turntable but i'm oddly intrigued/fascinated by the attention to detail vinyl-heads must pay to the various pressings.

Cast- All Change (1995)- *** (I remembered why I didn't remember this record. It's kinda flat. Nothing terrible, but no great songs ...
