There she goes. Again.

Deeper Well is one of my favorite songs from this past year. Overall I like this album a little more than her previous one, where I think she was trying to sound too much like Lana Del Ray.

I don't know what I was expecting from Kacey Musgraves. I've obviously mistaken her for Miranda Lambert, because "Deeper Well" surprised me. That said, it also didn't do anything for me. It felt like an Elliott Smith record, kinda drab and samey.

I watched Family Band: The Cowsills Story last night. It’s a good, but very sad documentary.

Bill,
I've been thinking about this for hours. I didn't mean to say the song "Deeper Well" didn't do anything for me. I meant the album as a whole. There are some lovely moments, just as there are some lovely moments on Elliott Smith's records. I certainly didn't want to rain on your parade, if that's the way my initial comment sounded.

One of the reasons I love "Deeper Well" (like I love "Golden Hour") is that while it is "samey" in the sense that it has a fairly consistent sound/vibe -- there are lyrics that just just leap right out in many of the songs and touch me where most albums don't. DW doesn't challenge me, but it also doesn't put me to sleep either. It's a great Sunday morning album.

I think my problem is that I went into the album expecting something totally different. A dreamy, Sunday morning album was not on my radar at that time. I'll give it another go with a different set of ears.

No rain at all, Sal. I had a similar reaction the last time I listened to it. I like Golden Hour because it’s a bit more varied. When you get the inclination again, give the song Deeper Well another go. It grew on me.

I did not get into Golden Hour but for some reason I dig Deeper Well much more. Go figure! Ultimately, musical taste is chemistry: you + the moment+the music+life+reaction. I don't mean to imply my reaction to any one album changes constantly depending on the cycles of the moon or the hour of the day. But a late night, lights off album won't work as well during a picnic etc. And here's where it's germane for me: sometimes I'm finally ready to hear something and it clicks, whereas before it didn't click. 99 times out of a hundred, a great album is always a great album and a poor album is always poor. But the right mood helps to be receptive. For me.
