So I went to the Outlaw Festival last night in Holmdel NJ. Unfortunately Willie hasn't rejoined the tour yet, but is looking to later in the week. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were great, although it was absolutely pouring down rain for most of their set. I'm not a big Led Zeppelin fan, mostly because of Plant's singing. But I really like his voice these days--the sand he and Allison raised on their first album together added some needed rough edges to the screeching.
It had been over 20 years since I last saw Mr Zimmerman, perform. I know from fans his Rough & Rowdy shows were getting 5-star reviews, but my own experience over the years has been to take those reviews with a grain of salt. And watching some of the recent YouTube clips has confirmed my suspicions. Still, I went in with an open mind and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. He has a whole new set list which, while not really filled with hits, is hit-adjacent enough for an outdoor crowd. A couple of the arrangements sucked some of the life out of the songs--Can't Wait was really off to me, for instance. But his band plays well and it was nice to see Jim Keltner behind the kit. Highlights for me were Love Sick, Under the Red Sky, and the guest harmonica player on Simple Twist of Fate.
A good, soggy night for me. And I wasn't the oldest guy there!
I've seen Bob at least six times in the last ten years, knowing full well the set lists would be disappointing and the arrangements would all blend into each other, and yet I am always mesmerized just watching him.
I was pretty pleased with Sunday's set list--he played a bunch of songs I hadn't seen before, And those crazy covers! Our seats were far away up the lawn, and Dylan has the camera set at one angle to show the whole band, so I couldn't pay much attention to Bob. He was a white speck behind the piano.
