10/10/25

Peter Tosh- The Toughest (1996)- ***1/2
The Lijadu Sisters- Horizon Unlimited (1979)- ***1/2

Jeff Tweedy- Twilight Override: Disc Two (2025)- **1/2
(zzzzzzzzzz....THUD.)

The Beatles- Please Please Me (MONO, 1967/2025)-****

The Monkees- Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.: Kevin Gray Stereo Master (1967/2025)- ****
(Another stunning release from Kevin Gray.)

v/a-Play On: A Raspberries Tribute (2025)- ****

(This didn't disappoint. Really solid throughout, but nothing here is better than the originals, though Chris Price's Motown/Girl Group arrangement of "Nobody Knows" is pretty damn great. No real clams, though I could do without Ken Sharp, and the Shoes sucked the life out of "Overnight Sensation.")

Say She She- Cut & Rewind (2025)-****
Pink Floyd- Masters Of Rock (1974)- ****
The Jam - Sound Affects (1980)- ****

Fleetwood Mac- Rumours: Personal Edit (1977/2025)- ****

(Get rid of "Don't Stop," "Oh Daddy" and "Gold Dust Woman" and add "Silver Springs." A much better record!)

Pixies- Surfer Rosa (1988)-****

Hard not to get some joy out of a Peter Tosh album. Tweedy disc 2 cured my insomnia.

Yesterday was my first listen to Horses 50th anniversary disc 2. There will be plenty more spins. Some great outtakes!

Also loved the latest from Los Straitjackets and the self-titled album from Shrunken Elvis which mixes pedal steel with some Another Green World style treated guitar. Both albums strongly recommended.

The Tosh is the early Heartbeat collection of his 60's stuff. Second half is great, but the first half dozen songs or so, border on novelty.

Listened to "Somos" a second time the other day, and it was much better than the first spin. I never realized just how much they sound like early Beatles.

Will check out Shrunken Elvis.

My second spin of Somos was better, too. I expect the next will be even better.

Re Jeff Tweedy review: hahahahaha. Justice for Stevie Nicks putting in "Silver Springs," though I wouldn't dump "Don't Stop" however tired one may be of it. However, since McVie has four tracks (more than anyone else), it's only fair she take the loss of "Oh Daddy."

And if George Martin and the boys hadn't been so dumb, adding "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" to Sgt Pepper would make that great album truly unbeatable. And no, I wouldn't dump "Within You, Without You." I think maybe "Fixing a Hole" and "Good Morning Good Morning", one each from John and Paul.
