Ha! I've always been a tad bored by "Runnin' Down A Dream" too.

Fan of Petty's "Runnin' Down A Dream" and the University of Florida Gators football here. It's a great tune speeding down the highway with the windows down on the way to the game. The song paralllels Petty's own dreams to become a musician as well as the Gator's dreams to become National champions. The incessant drum beat seems to reflect the need to keep hammering and pounding away to achieve that dream. On a side note the Gators have a tradition of playing Petty's "I Won't Back Down" at the end of the third quarter of home games to remind the opposing team that they won't back down in the pursuit to run down their dream.
RIP Tom and GO GATORS!

The backstory is great. And I could see how in that context, the song might work emotionally. But as song, without Gators football, it's awful.

The chorus is :"DA DA deh. Deh deh DA. DA DA deh. De de DA." And that riff? "Do DA do DEE do da do DEE do" is a nerve shredder, to this big time Petty fan.

UF grad. Always proud the Gators could cheat better than most anybody! :) Plus, as I've bitched before, as soon as I came to UF Petty stopped swinging by for years and I never got to see him in Gainesville. Bitter! ORANGE!

Oh I didn't mean to lie. I WENT to UF for seven lovely years but I did not graduate. Oops! Talk about cheating!

Go Dawgs!

There's a lifeless quality to Runnin' Down a Dream, like the soul was sucked out and replaced by a drum machine and sickness. The who-hoos sound automated. It's almost good/great, but instead it comes off as bland and monotonous (to me at least) Always better live.

Runnin' Down A Dream is the song I always point to when I'm asked to come up with an example of a song that has excellent verses and a terrible, terrible chorus.
