Really like one of the other LBOG lps, "Plays Fats." Got to see them in NO about 12 years ago. The night before, at BJ's Lounge, located about 4 blocks from my then house, a local blues band was playing when Robert Plant walked in and sang several songs with them (Plant was performing with LBOG at the time).
I've got a funny LBOG story that I'd bet happened the same week.
LBOG is playing The Parish the same night Robert Plant is doing the Midnight Preserves at Pres. Hall with Patty Griffin. I bump into C.C. in the FQ and he asked if we were coming to The Parish. We say yes, and he says, "You are going to love our special guest." So I said, "Robert?" He winked and smiled.
The Parish is mobbed! I mean, the most people I have ever seen for LBOG. People hanging in the stairwell of the side door. The Plant rumor must have spread.
Two songs into the set, C.C., clearly aggravated, starts ranting, "Sorry. No Zep covers tonight! Sorry it's just us!" Plant must have bailed on the two shows in one night. So for the whole night, it's just C.C. getting annoyed at the crowd, that he assumed was there for Plant. "It's only us! Leave if you want!"
LBOG were killer, of course.
Great story! No one really knew in advance about Plant being at BJ's - was the typical mid week crowd for there. I was at the bar getting a drink, and I heard people in the crowd starting to cheer and I first saw his backside, and thought no way. Then he got on the stage and turned around and I was just stunned. As I recall, no LZ covers that night. Just old blues/rnr covers. The LBOG concert was at the Mahalia Jackson and it was packed. I had seen them once before, in Lafayette, and Plant was not part of the group then.
I first encountered Tommy McLain on Charlie Gillett's great Another Saturday Night compilation, and was compelled to obtain all Tommy's recordings, solo, with LBOG, with C.C. and with Willie Tee & Cypress - a true legend
A handful of Bryan Ferry solo albums were recently remixed/released in Dolby Atmos. Bête Noire has more space and even a little grit in the sound, to my humble ears. Very much diggin’ it! :)
I listened to "Another Saturday Night" yesterday. Whenever I play it, a different track jumps out at me. The Gary Walker track, "Who Needs You So Bad" is just perfect record making AND it was written by Tommy McLain.
