Saw Paris 1919 pop up on the Best Thing I Listened To Today sidebar and had to come over and say hello. Definitely in the running for Cale's best album. I wish Antarctica Starts Here had been recorded above a whisper. Otherwise, a perfect LP.

Absolutely my favorite Cale record. I posted on Instagram yesterday how it was without question, one of my 20 faves of all time. It really is perfect.
Vintage Violence is my other contender. I love the sound of that record. But then, I love the sound of Paris 1919 too.

I really and truly love everything from Vintage Violence through 1982's "Music For A New Society." The Island trifeca- "Fear," "Slow Dazzle," and Helen Of Troy" are also some of my favorite records of all time. Even the experimental records-- "Academy In Peril" and "Church Of Anthrax"--have moments.
If I may make a confession, father: I often enjoy Cale's solo work more than Lou Reed's. At least, I think the highs are higher, and the period you noted until 1982 is more consistent.

That's a no-brainer for me.
I have this discussion with a friend of mine constantly.
He is a Lou/Velvets fanatic, yet he's never heard a note of "Paris 1919."
Lou's first 4 on RCA are classic. But then, it really is a lot more miss than hit, for me. Though I do love "Blue Mask," "Street Hassle" and of course, "New York." I just find Cale's records more interesting.
Listening to "Academy In Peril" now. A perfect combo of beautiful and strange.
Agree with your top Lou picks. I'd add in New Sensations too. The first time I saw him live was on that tour (with Robert Quine on guitar), so it holds a special place for me. He even stopped by a local record store the afternoon of the show for a signing. So I have a Lou Reed autographed album, which I never thought possible.
