Have you commented on Let It Be yet? Apologies if I missed it. I never listened to the bootlegs so I started with the Glynn Johns tracks for that original Get Back vibe. Have to say I really liked it, def a basement tapes feel. I'm sure it would have been utterly puzzling if released but risen in stature over the years. The sense of being a fly on the wall and the beatles as a band jamming on some tunes is terrific. Not sure Let It Be or The Long and Winding Road would have become such massive hits if the Johns mix were the one released. It all would have been a head-spinning contrast to Abbey Road whether released before or after. After a breather I'll listen to the album proper and then the outtakes.
I have not written anything about it yet. Not sure I will. I listened backwards. First the EP, which I loved. Then the Glyn Johns' "Get Back," which I also loved. The sessions were hit and miss, as expected, but there are a few gems. The disappointment was the remix of the album proper, which did not jump out at me like previous remixes. That might be because I don't love the record as much as the others. Still, I am happy with the vinyl purchase and do not have buyer's remorse like I did with "ATMP."
Well then I'll keep this just between us. :) I really know next to nothing about the bootlegs. I ignored everything and just wanted to listen to what Johns had originally submitted and loved it. But if I had any cavils it was that John was under-represented without Across The Universe and I Me mine and surely putting Let It be and Winding Road back to back was less than clever? See, I hadn't even looked to see what was on his second stab at the album yet. And oh my gosh, it addresses everything perfectly. I'm sorry to lose Teddy Boy and would have cut Maggie May but they're both toss-offs anyway and maybe the shorter punchier Maggie may works better somehow in context. but that's a very minor point. Every modest complaint I had is fixed and it's just fantastic! Oh they were mad not to release it. Well, not mad. But what a shame. It would have been so bold and beaten Dylan to the punch and then they could have ended with the polish of Abbey Road as the climax. Ah well. But I want my GLYN JOHNS WUZ RIGHT button!
P.S. Never have buyer' remorse. You bought ATMP for all the right reasons and you'd regret more not buying it I bet than you do plonking down some money for a Beatle. Never a bad thing to do.
