I've been binging Tom Petty and he does NOT benefit from that. At all. Southern Accents esp hits me discordantly as a white guy bemoaning the good ole days, though I know that's not Petty as such and really a character but still. Dated? And the rest of it blurs a bit after the early great stuff. But Full Moon Fever stands out. It's Wildflowers that I downgraded heavily though perhaps the boxed set will get me re-appraising again. And Im hopeful my enthusiasm for his last few albums will hold up on a new listen. Just needed to pause as the meh reactions piled up.
Still bummed I never saw him live.
Southern Accents is one of two Petty albums I do not own. I think it's a bore. The other is "Mojo" which is almost as boring. That said, I had a discussion not too long ago with a bandmate regarding Petty and whether he's really as great as his reputation. I am sure it would be a very unpopular subject to say he was overrated, but this venue seems safe, since few people check out "Now Playing."
It just so happens that the two records you mentioned are my two favorites--"Full Moon Fever" and "Wildflowers." Those are the only two I can play from top to bottom, speaking of albums, though I can't stand "Running Down A Dream," my choice for worst song to become a huge hit. "Da Da DA. DA da da. Da da DA. DA da da."
All of TP"s records have great songs, but also as many weak songs.
