Listened to the XTC singles collection Fossil Fuel yesterday. Enjoyed it a lot, but I have questions. Like how the heck was Great Fire ever a single? And only two singles from Oranges and Lemons?
OOH! I know this.
"Great Fire" was a single because it has the same structure as their last U.S. hit, "Senses Working Overtime." Weird verses, triumphant choruses. Record label people are schmucks. They didn't hear a weaker song. They just heard the similarity.
Well, that’s some twisted logic. At least they didn’t pick Human Alchemy.
And I forgot The Loving is on Oranges snd Lemons. So I that’s three from there.
Well, not that twisted. That's been the format since the 60's. I can think of more examples
You Really Got Me- All Day & All Of The Night
Elenore- You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain
Young Americans- Golden Years
That's just off the top of my head.
