The Beatles- Help! (U.K. Stereo)- ****

Sabrina Carpenter- Man's Best Friend (2025)- ***1/2
(I finally gave this a fair and focused spin and there is more to like than I originally thought. It wasn't horrible. It's pop music, sure, but some of it was really good pop music. Might even listen a second time,)

The Cure- Disintegration: Dr. Wu's Reluctant Edit (1989/2025)- ***
(I, for one, would have cut "The Same Deep Water As You." I lost patience at four minutes, with six minutes more to go.)

12/20/25

James McCartney- Me (2013)- ****
(I don't know how this record eluded me all this time, but I loved it. Yes, of course it sounds like his father at times, but that's what's so great about it. Every song sounded like a different era of Paul.)

Pete Townshend- All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes (1982)- ****
The Roches- Another World (1985)- ****

Nektar- A Tab In The Ocean (1972)- **1/2
(I love prog rock. But this record didn't do a thing for me. I imagine this is what prog haters think all prog rock sounds like.)

12/15/25

Phil Lynott- The Philip Lynott Album (1982)- ***1/2

Dijon- Baby (2025)- **
(A friend enjoyed his performance on SNL and thought I should give the record a spin. Made it about halfway. It's everything I despise about the current state of pop music- half-assed ideas, no actual songs, samples and effects, two note melodies. Nope.)

Robin Zander- The Canyon Club, 12/12/13 (2013)- ***1/2
(This was fun, RZ playing some deep Cheap Trick tracks, a few solo tracks and a whole lotta covers. Zander sounds amazing, as always, but the band is very hamfisted. Good show, once.)

Ray Charles- The Genius Sings The Blues (1961)- ****
The Specials- S/T (1979)- ****

The Parlor Mob- And You Were A Crow (2009)- ****

(Saw these guys at the Mercury Lounge about a year before this record came out and I felt like they were going to explode. It was like watching Led Zeppelin in someone's living room. But, they never happened. I still love this record.)

Steve Cropper - Dedicated: A Salute To The 5 Royales (2011)-****

Dr. John- The Sun, Moon & Herbs (1971)- ****
(Lost in the shadows of "Gris-Gris" and the two classics that followed, this is a fine, fine album.)

Buffalo Springfield- S/T: MONO (1966)- ****
Peter Tosh- Equal Rights (1977)- ****

Splinter- The Place I Love (1974)- ****

(A lost classic! So lost, I forget to play it more often. Produced by George Harrison, and featuring a few of George's usual sidemen, it sounds like a George album if he lived in Laurel Canyon.)

Sunday, December 14, 2025

12/13/25

Noro Morales- Walter Winchell Rhumba (2000)-****
(Recorded 1942-1949, excellent collection of Latin and Cuban big band rhumba. Thanks to pmac for the tip.)

Allen Toussaint- The Bright Mississippi (2009)- ***
Prince Buster– Sings His Hit Song Ten Commandments (1967)- ****
Irma Thomas- Love Is The Foundation (2020)- ****

The Jesus And Mary Chain- Psychocandy (1985)- **12
(I can't believe I once loved this record. Once I love something, I rarely grow out of it. But this spin annoyed the hell out of me.)

The Mavericks- Trampoline (1995)- ***1/2
World Party- Bang! (1993)- ****
Blue Oyster Cult- Secret Treaties (1974)- ****
Ramones- One Two Three Four: A Burning Wood Playlist (2025)- ****

Happy Mondays- The Factory Singles (2025)- **
(Missed out on these guys first time around, so I went into this collection fresh. This band is truly horrible. I don't get it.)

The Rolling Stones- Live At L'Abbatoir, Paris: 6/6/76 (2025)- ***1/2
(This club date taken from the Blu Ray in the big "Black & Blue" box is a helluva lot better than the full length arena show that is also in the box. Band is more inspired and Mick is singing more than barking.)

Faces- Ooh La La: Kevin Gray Master (1973/2025) - ****
Dave Edmunds- Repeat When Necessary (1979)- ****

12/12/25

Duwayne Burnside- Red Rooster (2025)- ****
(Just wow! If I had I heard this before writing up my year-end list, it would have been in the Top 10. A fresh, gritty and occasionally breezy blues record.)

RYLI- Come & Get Me (2025)- **1/2
(Not for me. I gave up after 4 songs.)

The Nice- The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack (1968)- ***1/2

The Band- The Best Of:RM (1976/2025)- ***

(Great compilation but the new remaster is a muddy mess.)

Ernest Ranglin- Below The Bassline (1996)- ***1/2

12/11/25

Psi-Psonics- Expanding To One (2025)- ***
(I was expecting "spiritual jazz" a la Pharoah Sanders. This was nice but I wanted something heavier.)

The Ting Tings- Home (2025)- **1/2

(I guess a record that sounds like a good Fleetwood Mac record can be a good thing. But for me, it was an unpleasant distraction. It sounded too much like Fleetwood Mac. I'd rather listen to "Rumours.")

Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here 50 (2025)- ****

Molly Tuttle- So Long Little Miss Sunshine (2025)- ****

(Lovely record. So many earworms. Really great songs, too.)

Paul Carrack- Suburban Voodoo (1982)- ****
Judy Mowatt- Black Woman (1980)- ****

Jimmy Cliff- Hard Road To Travel (1967)- ***

(First time hearing this one. There is nothing reggae about this record. This is more like a Northern Soul record from the U.K.. Not bad, but doesn't need a second spin.)

Winterpills- This Is How We Dance (2025)- ***1/2
(I haven't thought about these guys in years. This was pretty great. Smart arrangements, sweet harmonies, like the Mamas & The Papas meet Midlake on at least three or four songs.)

The Lemon Twigs & Friends- Written By Ronnie D'Addario (2025)- ****

Kim Wilde- Closer (2025)- **1/2
(I wouldn't have listened to this if it wasn't for BW's friend Shriner's review. I loved "Chequered Love" and "Kids In America" back in the day and tried, but failed, to stay in the Kim Wilde world. This record though, doesn't work for me. It feels like two backing tracks- danceable new wave and HBO promo drama ballad. Kim sings fine over both, but it's so manufactured, read: contrived, I couldn't appreciate the nostalgia.)

Simply Red- Recollections: Personal Edit (2025)- ****
(Faithful new recordings of 40 classic tracks for the band's 40th anniversary. Nothing groundbreaking, but I really enjoyed it. They were a great live band who I saw a few times at the legendary Bottom Line.)

v/a-Tribute To The Beatles Reggae Style: Personal Edit (2001)- ***

The Cops 'N Robbers- S/T (1997)-***1/2

(The entire output of this 60's beat group from Britain. Some great stuff, some average. But all of it is fun. Think Yardbirds with less of a focus on guitars, and more on the organ and harmonica.)

Ricky Byrd- NYC Made (2025)- ****
Sweet- Action: The Sweet Anthology, Personal Edit (2009)-****
Deep Purple- Personal Playlist (2025)- ****
Dead Boys- We Have Come For Your Children (1978)- ****

Herlin Riley- Cream Of The Crescent (2004)- ***1/2

Nicholas Payton- TRIUNE (2025)- **1/2

Todd Rundgren- Up Against It (1997)- ***1/2
Led Zeppelin- Madison Square Garden, 7/29/73: Highlights (2015)- ***

Del Shannon- The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover (1968)-****

Suede- Antidepressants (2025)- ****

Genesis- Selling England By The Pound: Nick Davis Remix (1973/2008)- ****
Joni Mitchell- Wild Things Run Fast (1982)- ***

Steely Dan- Katy Lied: UHQR (1975/2025)- ***

(This is being touted as one of the greatest sounding records ever. Maybe you need a $100,000 stereo to appreciate it. I thought it was a bit muddy and lifeless.)

Del Shannon- Move It On Over (2011)- ****
(One of my very favorite compilations courtesy of Norton Records, this covers Del's Amy and Berlee sides. Every track a great record.)

The Lemon Twigs & Friends- Written By Ronnie D'Addario (2025)- ****
The La's- S/T (1990)- ****

Motorhead- Rock 'N' Roll (1987)- ****

(Their last truly great album, though "1916" from 1991 is pretty solid. If Dave Edmunds, who produced Motorheadby the way, recorded the title track, it'd be a crowd pleaser. Maybe it's Lemmy's growl. Who knows? This band has been kicking my ass for almost 50 years.)

Joni Mitchell- Turbulent Indigo (1994)- ****

Syl Johnson- Is it Because I'm Black (1970)- ***1/2
Roxy Music- For Your Pleasure: Abbey Road HSM (1973/2022)- ****

Joni Mitchell- Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm (1988)- ***
(This sounds more like a Peter Gabriel record. Some nice stuff, but horribly dated. And do we really need Billy Idol, Steve Stevens, Thomas Dolby, Benjamin Orr and Don Henley on a Joni record? How about Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Wayne Shorter, Wendy & Lisa and Peter Gabriel? They are here, too. I guess Madonna, The Buggles and Saga were busy.)

The Beatles- VI: MONO (1965)- ****

(I forgot about this one. This is a Joe Henry produced project featuring the voices of Mavis Staples, Irma Thomas, Ann Peebles, Allen Toussaint and Billy Preston, though Allen Toussaint plays piano on all tracks as well as doing all the horn arrangements. Really a solid listen.)

(I watched "Wired for Chaos," the documentary on Harley Flanagan. It's a fantastic film that I don't think you need to be a fan of The Cro-Mags or hardcore punk to enjoy, though I am a fan of both. It put me in the mood for this record, where Harley, at 12 years ago, is kicking ass on drums...if you like this sort of thing. But, I highly recommend "Wired For Chaos" to anyone who is a fan of documentaries, regardless of the subject.)
