Tyrannosaurus Rex-Prophets, Seers & Sages...(1968)- ****
James Booker- Corner Cafe: New Orleans, 5/7/82- **1/2

Mavis Staples- Sad And Beautiful World (2025)- ****

(A few really amazing and moving songs here. Solid throughout.)

Bob Dylan- Buffalo, 8/8/25-***

(One of a handful of soundboards from the Outlaw Festival- fun listen, once.)

La Gusana Ciega- Conejo En El Sombrero (2011)- ***

(I really enjoyed the track posted over at Power Pop, so I had to track down the whole record. Good stuff. Might have enjoyed it more if I understood the language. Tropicalia works in Portuguese, but power pop not so much in Spanish.)

Q65- Revival (1969)- ***1/2
Squeeze- Argybargy: Personal Edit (1980)- ****
Squeeze- Play (1991)- ****

I listened to Mavis’s new one today. It starts off very well, her voice as strong as ever. All of the songs are fine, but nearly all are the same tempo. I’d like a bit more funk mixed in.

Paul Kelly’s Seventy is also very good, but it also sticks mostly in a comfortable mid-tempo groove unlike last year’s more varied Fever Longing Still.

I was thinking the same about Mavis, also noting that there wasn't a single one of her signature grunts or "yeahs" on it. But I realized her age and then thought about Nick Lowe's recent output and I was okay with it.

Definitely looking forward to listening to the new Mavis album. My wife and I were fortunate to have attended her 85th birthday concert in Chicago last year (we also attended her 75th with the all-star lineup) and she has definitely slowed down. She sounded great but needed to sit for about half the show. But God bless her for still kicking ass at 85 (now 86)!! And we're going to see her again in February. She's amazing.

Oh good, now I'm really looking forward to the Mavis Staples. Also, Willie Nelson has delivered a lot of pretty good/solid albums in recent years. I think the new Merle Haggard tribute is a cut above. His guitar playing is sharp, his voice craggy and falling apart (nicely) and it's sweet to hear him say several times "Play, little sis" when his sister solos on piano. Good stuff. He should do a Dolly Parton album next.

I was putting off listening to the Willie. Ya know, another tribute record. Thanks for the nudge.
