7/6/25

John Cale- Vintage Violence (Kevin Gray Master)- ****

The Rascals- Time Peace: Greatest Hits (MONO)- ***1/2
(New release from Friday Music is a muddy mess. Great songs, but better sound elsewhere.)

Nico- Chelsea Girl- ***1/2

Gladys Knight & The Pips- S/T- ***1/2
(Some of this pre-Motown stuff is excellent.)

Oasis- (What's The Story) Morning Glory?- ****
Black Sabbath- Paranoid- ****
The Byrds- Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-****
John Cale- Paris 1919- ****
Galactic And Irma Thomas- Audience With The Queen-****
Lee Dorsey- Yes We Can-****

Lou Ann Barton- Read My Lips- ***1/2
(An amazing voice singing fantastic songs with killer musicians behind her. But Lou Ann's records all suffer from bad production. This is a terrific record marred by terrible 80's bombast. Every song sounds like it is vying for a spot in a "Lethal Weapon" bar scene. DO OVER!)

Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos- The Prosthetic Cubans- ****

The Marc Ribot set is very good. Looks like you had a fine day of listening yesterday.

Good list. I've been on a John Cale binge myself lately. What does the number 39 in the black box signify?

It may be flawed, but it is the best Lou Ann Barton record you can find. Dreams Come True was also good with Ball and Strehli.

I wasn't too thrilled with Friday Music's "Time Peace" either. What would you recommend?

Have had the pleasure of taking in numerous Galactic and Irma Thomas shows at the N.O. Jazz Fest over the past 35 years.
Their recent collaboration on Audience With The Queen could make the crawfish boil.
P'Cola in the house !

The first Friday version mastered by Kevin Gray was fine. But that was stereo. This new edition is MONO and it's awful. If you want "Time/Peace," and original in stereo is the way to go. Also the MONO "Summer Of Love" version of "Groovin'" that Rhino released is essential.

I see you picked "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" as the Best...
I'm going to give it another try while reading the MOJO Oasis Essentials edition. But this is the last time. I swear.

Again, it was the best thing I listened to. Not a better album than anything else I listened to. Just the record I enjoyed hearing most. And for the record, I don't like Oasis. As BBJ said, they are "boring and bloated." They shot their load on "Morning Glory." All the Oasis tracks I love are on this record. Everything else? Meh.

Cast- All Change (1995)- *** (I remembered why I didn't remember this record. It's kinda flat. Nothing terrible, but no great songs ...
