For this white boy listening to reggae, a comp titled I'll Be Black is amusing. (It's not a "black" music; there's no such thing! Liberal disclaimer.) Oh and I listened to Pussy Cats and got really annoyed all over again at Lennon and Nilsson. RIGHT after recording A Touch of Schmilsson in the Night (an absolutely gorgeous album, vocal wise and generally excellent) they go and shred his voice. Arghhhh. He did Popeye later, which I'm really digging, but what a waste of a gift.

I think "Pussy Cats" is underrated. There are at least 5 gems, including that gorgeous cover of "Save The Last Dance For Me."

It would have to be underrated since most people ignore it. But I found it painful and angering, with precious little to justify trashing his voice. I don't need "pretty" voices, obviously (Dylan, Neil Young, Chalamet) (joke!) but still, no need to destroy one.

It has since be revisited over the years, including a few special releases, one as recently as last year by Vinyl Me, Please. Pitchfork rates it at 7.8. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But also, you say "justify trashing his voice" as if they purposely went into the studio to trash his voice for affect. Berry Gordy did that with Mary Wells, having her sing take after take after take of "Bye Bye Baby" until her voice was unrecognizable. That's when Gordy said, "That's the one." Nilsson's vocal cords ruptured during the session and they just kept going. A horrible thing to happen, and definitely irresponsible on everyone's part, but I think much different than planning on it as some sort of production trick.
